Vale beaten by battling Burton

Port Vale's play-off hopes were dented as their six-game unbeaten run came to an end with a 1-0 defeat against Burton at the Pirelli Stadium. Burton gained swift revenge for a 3-1 defeat at Vale Park only three weeks ago with midfielder Jacques Maghoma grabbing the only goal of the game. The first half looked to be heading for a goalless stalemate until Maghoma found a chink in Vale's defensive armour in the 39th minute. The former Tottenham youngster turned well and made room for an eight-yard shot past Chris Martin. Louis Dodds had a shot blocked by the legs of Burton goalkeeper Artur Krysiak in the opening exchanges while Robert Taylor fired over the bar two minutes after Maghoma's goal. Referee Phil Crossley brushed aside visiting appeals for a penalty after Marc Richards' overhead kick appeared to hit a raised Burton arm in the 53rd minute. Craig Davies saw an angled shot come back off a post in the 69th minute as Vale searched in vain for an equaliser.
