Tomlinson proud of record
Port Vale goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson has spoken of his joy at helping set a new defensive club record, but admits they got lucky late on against Shrewsbury.
Tuesday`s 1-0 victory over Town secured a record-breaking fifth consecutive clean sheet for Tomlinson and Vale`s back four, with 512 minutes having passed since they last conceded a league goal.
But Shrews defender David Raven came close to spoiling the celebration when his 84th-minute header hit the inside of a post and rolled across the line before being cleared to safety.
Tomlinson, who this week agreed a new deal at Vale Park, told the club`s official website: "I was delighted to keep another clean sheet and I have been very fortunate to play behind such a sold back four. We are now four points ahead in the league, but it`s a marathon and not a sprint.
"I thought we were very good out there. Shrewsbury had obviously set their stall out to attack us. But to our credit we passed the ball and we were patient and I think it was a good all-round team performance.
"I think when you`re on a winning streak like we are at the moment, you get things like the ball hitting the post and coming out. If we were on a losing streak that might have gone in, you just don`t know. However when you are winning everything seems to go for you."
