The forward, 20, joined Vale from Middlesbrough back in May 2008 and, having overcome a hamstring injury, went on to make five starts and 12 substitute appearances for the club last season, scoring two goals. However, he was placed on the transfer list by incoming manager Micky Adams at the start of this season and has spent the last month on loan at Stafford Rangers. Thompson will leave the club immediately and he told the official website: "I need to be playing games and at the present time that's not happening. By taking this route it allows me to continue my career elsewhere. "I would like to wish the club all the best for the future and also the fans who supported me during my time here."
