Striker set to avoid Vale ban

The Vale striker was given his marching orders for violent conduct 10 minutes before the interval when, after committing a foul in the middle of the pitch, he reacted angrily to being nudged from behind by his opponent. Nantwich defender Chris Flynn was also dismissed as more players got involved, with Vale striker Danny Glover also receiving a yellow card for his involvement. Midfielder Dave Howland and a further three Dabbers players were also cautioned before the break. Football regulation changes made only on Tuesday state that sanctions resulting from red cards shown in pre-season friendlies will not apply to competitive first-team games. The most serious of misconduct cases can be reviewed if felt necessary, although Thompson should escape punishment for the league campaign before possibly facing a ban next pre-season. However, Vale boss Micky Adams insists the former Middlesbrough marksman will be disciplined by the club on a night of further disappointment for the League Two outfit. Former Vale youth-team player Ashley Carter grabbed a brace and Geoff Horsfield notched an own goal as the Valiants were sunk by their non-league opponents, with Adam Yates netting a consolation effort.
