Roberts handed a lifeline by Vale

Midfielder Gary Roberts has been given the chance to resurrect his career by Port Vale manager Micky Adams. The 23-year-old has suffered several off-field issues which have hampered his career and seen him released from Crewe, Yeovil and Rotherham. However, Adams has given Roberts the chance to impress during pre-season. Adams told The Sentinel: "Gary is training with us which allows us to have a look at him. I don't know anything about him apart from his off-field escapades. "That's not a concern because if he steps out of line he'll be gone and I've laid everything out to him. He's got a bit of baggage, but I've handled bigger and better players than him." Adams will now assess the fitness of the midfielder before deciding whether to involve him in either of this weekend's pre-season games at Harborough Town on Saturday or Sunday's visit to Biddulph Victoria.
