Roberts earns Vale win

Gary Roberts fired his first Port Vale goal to keep his team among the early pacesetters and inflict Aldershot's first league defeat of the season in a 1-0 win. The home side made a strong and confident start they were rewarded with the winning goal in the 10th minute. Roberts fired a 20-yard shot from Tommy Fraser's pass and the ball took a deflection to leave Shots keeper Jamie Young helpless. Aldershot recovered from their shaky opening as Manny Panther headed narrowly wide from close range and Anthony Straker forced a smart stop from Stuart Tomlinson. The visitors were the better side in the second half and Straker squandered a great chance to equalise when he headed horribly wide from six yards following Marvin Morgan's pinpoint cross in the 56th minute. But Vale stood strong and substitute Louis Dodds was denied a second by a brilliant last minute save from Young.
