Anthony Grant back in contention for Port Vale

Port Vale boss Bruno Ribeiro must weigh up whether to recall Anthony Grant for their Sky Bet League One clash with Walsall on Boxing Day.

The midfielder has been sidelined through suspension since mid-November, serving one match for his red card against Fleetwood and another five for his reaction after he returned to the pitch to confront the officials.

Vale have failed to win a league game in his absence and have slipped to 17th in the table, putting Ribeiro's position in serious doubt.

Jerome Thomas and Ben Purkiss should both be available after returning to training following injury and could go straight into the starting line-up following last weekend's 4-0 embarrassment against AFC Wimbledon.

Walsall midfielders Maz Kouhyar and Reece Flanagan are back in training after long-term knee problems but may not be ready to feature at Port Vale.

Former Coventry youngster Kouhyar has been sidelined since October with knee trouble, while Flanagan has been out since April with serious ligament damage.

Isaiah Osbourne is hoping for another start as he bids to put an injury-plagued 18 months behind him and drive Walsall up the table.

Franck Moussa could come into contention after featuring off the bench in the 1-1 draw against Bradford.
