Gulls held in Vale stalemate

Battling Port Vale ended Torquay's five-match winning run as they recorded a goalless draw to regain some pride after Tuesday's ignominious FA Cup exit at Grimsby Town.

New loan signing Jennison Myrie-Williams made a lively start for Vale, but it was the in-form visitors who asked most of the early questions.

Billy Bodin was wriggling his way past Vale defenders with ease and a couple of his deliveries into the danger area caused problems.

But Vale stuck gamely to the task and almost took the lead five minutes before the break when Tom Pope's 10-yard volley was brilliantly saved by Robert Olejnik.

Micky Adams' men also started the second period on the front foot as they snapped into every challenge to force the Gulls to defend in depth.

And Pope came close to opening the scoring in the 66th minute when he steered his header from Myrie-Williams' cross narrowly wide of the target.

Vale substitute Sean Rigg thought he had won it seven minutes from time when his volley flew past Olejnik but was headed off the line by Kevin Nicholson.
