Newton - Fans are backing me

Mike Newton believes he has the backing of the majority of Port Vale fans as he looks to make a sizeable investment into the club and replace Bill Bratt as chairman on a new-look board. Newton last week increased his offer from £400,000 to £500,000, handing a written proposal of the updated sum to Bratt after Saturday`s 1-1 home draw with Chesterfield. And the New York-based businessman, who has held two public meetings with Vale fans during his two-week long trip to Staffordshire, feels he has the club`s fans on his side when it comes a board decision regarding his proposed deal. "If there was a popular vote on my proposals tomorrow I think I'd win it comfortably," Newton told the Sentinel. "So many people came up to me on Saturday and told me not to give up and I've reassured them I will stick at it. "I upped my offer because I want to get the job done and I don't want to give the board any excuse not to. Any fans out there who doubted my commitment, money talks doesn't it? Offering to invest another £100,000 is an indication of my commitment." Bratt himself added: "Until we actually sit down, discuss his proposals and go through it, it is difficult to say anything. We don't exactly know what the fans are saying - we've heard positive and negative comments. We take everything into consideration, but the main thing is whether this is right for Port Vale."
