Ling formally applied for the position as manager at Vale on Wednesday having parted company with Orient by mutual consent back in January.[LNB]In his first managerial position, the former midfielder took the O's from the depths on League Two when he was appointed in 2003 to promotion in 2006, before maintaining their status in the third tier of English football.[LNB]Ling was the sixth longest-serving of all 92 league managers when he departed Brisbane Road earlier this year, and he believes he can realise Vale's potential.[LNB]"People who know the game know I did a good job at the Orient," said Ling in The Sentinel. "When I took over they were at a low ebb and second from bottom of League Two. But we stayed up and we then got them promoted to League One.[LNB]"I see Port Vale as being in a similar situation now. From what I know about Vale, the club is below the level it should be. I see it as a League One or Championship club."[LNB][LNB]
