They swept into the lead in the 15th minute when Sean Canham latched onto a free-kick from James McQuilkin to beat goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson from close range.

But Vale levelled in the 27th minute when Marc Richards rifled a penalty past goalkeeper Adam Bartlett after Canham had been sent off for upending Justin Richards.

Sean Rigg then went close to adding a second for the Valiants with a dipping 30-yard drive which flashed inches over the Hereford crossbar.

Vale keeper Tomlinson saved a penalty from Guillem Bauza to keep the score level at the break after Dominik Werling had been brought down by Anthony Griffith.

Justin Richards missed a gilt-edged chance to snatch victory for the Valiants when he headed over the crossbar from four yards at the death.
