Honours even in Pirelli stalemate

Burton battled to a share of the points against Port Vale as a fast and furious Staffordshire derby ended goalless. Marc Richards looked the man most likely to break the deadlock in a tightly-fought first half in which chances were few and far between. Home keeper Adam Legzdins tipped over a shot from the visiting skipper in the 22nd minute before using his legs to deny the same player a minute later. Burton struggled to make openings and their only notable effort was top-scorer Shaun Harrad's well-struck volley from the edge of the area in the 27th minute. Defences continued to dominate after the break, though Legzdins had to push a shot from substitute Sean Rigg round a post in the 63rd minute. Burton had to wait until the 84th minute for another decent opening but midfielder Russell Penn drove his shot wide. Vale had Burton hanging on in the closing stages but Doug Loft failed to hit the target from 20 yards.
