Gillingham 3-0 Port Vale: Report

28 December 2010 18:09
McDonald double downs Vale Port Vale missed the chance to return to the top of League Two as Cody McDonald's double helped Gillingham to a 3-0 win. Despite not having won at home since early October, the Kent side were full of confidence thanks to three straight away victories and it took McDonald just 34 seconds to open the scoring. The on-loan Norwich man got his second goal after 37 minutes to take his season's tally to eight before strike partner Adebayo Akinfenwa netted after the break. Vale made the worst possible start as John Nutter's deflected pass found McDonald who turned and fired home from the edge of the area. And the visitors found themselves 2-0 down when Akinfenwa released Barry Fuller down the right and his low cross was turned in at the far post by McDonald. McDonald nearly had his hat-trick moments after the break when his low 20-yard shot stuck the post. Despite missing the rebound Akinfenwa made amends on the hour mark when Matt Lawrence's blocked shot fell kindly to him and he lashed the ball home.
