Gannon sets out long-term vision

Port Vale boss Jim Gannon was in optimistic mood after beginning his tenure in charge with a 4-2 defeat at Burnley in the third round of the FA Cup. Goals from Clarke Carlisle, Tyrone Mears, Chris Eagles and Graham Alexander put the tie out of sight of Jim Gannon's men, but a goal in each half from Vale midfielder Rob Taylor ensured that the Clarets could not relax until the final whistle. "We knew it would be a particularly tough game, though I am disappointed in the nature in which we conceded the goals," Gannon said. "This is a team that will allow me the opportunity to build that vision. Given that the team lost three games out of the last four it was never going to be an overnight turnaround. "It wasn't about getting into the fourth round of the FA Cup, it's about winning promotion and maybe even challenging for that top spot in League Two. "This was a great opportunity to assess the squad and if we keep performing and improving, we have a very good chance to go forward from here."
