Port Vale boss Jim Gannon hailed the contribution of captain Marc Richards following his side's 2-2 draw with promotion rivals Shrewsbury. Richards headed his side into a 29th-minute lead and then earnt his side a point with an 83rd-minute penalty after Lionel Ainsworth and James Collins had given Shrewsbury the lead. "Marc's a very strong-minded player and it's great for him to be able to put the penalty away, get two goals, right in front of our fans and to be able to send them home happy," said Gannon. "If he hadn't missed the games he has this season (through a thigh injury) I think he would be among the division's top scorers. He can certainly catch up and two goals here can really whet his appetite to finish the season strongly. "It was a well-deserved point but I'm not sure we did enough and played well enough to deserve a win, but we certainly didn't deserve to lose. "It wasn't a great game of football but there was certainly lots of endeavour and passion and there was lots of incident which has made it feel entertaining."
