Downing left Cheltenham by mutual consent back in September having kept the club in League One on the final day of last season.[LNB]He has been out of the game since then but Vale boss Dean Glover has tempted him to the Potteries, where he takes over from Ian Brightwell as the club's number two.[LNB]Vale are currently finding life tough both on and off the pitch and Downing is hoping to play his part in a revival, while he has not ruled out once again taking the reins at a club somewhere down the line.[LNB]"When you've been out for five months like I have, you're keen to get back on the grass and work with some players," he told BBC Radio Stoke. "They have responded positively in training, but the proof of that needs to come in the form of results."[LNB]Regarding a return to management, he added: "I'm not pre-empting anything. My intention is to come here and help Dean out and that's what I want to do. In the future, maybe, but at the moment it's just nice to be back enjoying the training and working with the players."[LNB][LNB]
