But Collins insists the players must assume the blame for the defeat and make up for it against Wycombe on Saturday.
"We owe the manager a performance on Saturday because we all felt we let him down at Grimsby," he told The Sentinel.
"I don't think the tactics had anything to do with the defeat at Grimsby. It was 100% down to the players because nobody was on their game.
"I'll put my hand up and say I had a poor game. I have no excuses."
