Blades decision boosts Vale

Sheffield United have confirmed they will not appoint a permanent manager before the new year, meaning Port Vale will safely hold onto boss Micky Adams certainly for the time being at least. John Carver was named in caretaker charge of the Blades last week following the departure of Gary Speed who has taken over the Wales national team. Sheffield-born Adams is rumoured to be one of the frontrunners for the vacancy, although Vale's hierarchy have stressed their intention to fight for his services should any official approach be made. But United have now confirmed no action will be taken on their part for the remainder of this calendar year while they assess the criteria of those in their thoughts. A club statement from the Championship outfit read: "As the process of preparing the shortlist of candidates is still ongoing John Carver, currently acting in a caretaker role, will remain in charge of team affairs at least until early in the new year. "The club regards the decision concerning an appointment to be of such crucial importance that it will not be made in haste and will continue to consider the merits of all potential candidates. As a result no further comment will be made until a decision is reached."
