Russia's football union on Sunday honoured the memory of Poland's late president Lech Kaczynski, who died along with scores of senior Polish figures in an April 2010 air crash in Smolensk, western Russia.

Sergey Fursenko, Russian Football Union chief, lay a large floral wreath at the foot of a memorial plaque decicated to Kaczynski and other crash victims at Poland's presidential palace.

"Football is outside politics," Fursenko said. "With this tradition we are supporting people and demonstrating out position. We are just footballers," he added.

The late Kaczynski's twin bother, Poland's right-wing opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, paid tribute minutes before in a gesture repeated each month on the 10th, in memory of the April 10, 2010 crash.
