Poland manager stays true to form for Uruguay game

Poland manager Waldemar Fornalik on Tuesday named the foreign-based players squad for a friendly against Uruguay on November 14 in the northern port city of Gdansk.

Fornalik opted for what has become his trademark capping strategy since he took the job in July, mixing stalwarts, young players and men who were sidelined by his predecessor Franciszek Smuda.

Team captain Kuba Blaszczykowski will be back in action after an injury he picked up in action with his German club Borussia Dortmund sidelined him from Poland's 2014 World Cup qualifier against England two weeks ago.

He also called up rising star Grzegorz Krychowiak, one of the stand-out performers in the French top flight this season with Reims.

Fornalik will name the domestic-league players in his squad after this weekend's Polish league action.

The Uruguay match became the subject of wrangling when the England game in Warsaw was postponed due to torrential rain, after the roof of the capital's stadium was not closed in time.

Poland had pressed for the qualifier to be rescheduled to November 14, suggesting that Uruguay instead play Sweden, who host England in a friendly the same day.

But England stuck to their guns, preferring to stay in Warsaw and play the postponed match the next day.

They game ended in a 1-1 draw, after Poland came from behind.

Poland have met Uruguay on two previous occasions, both of them friendlies in Montevideo, drawing 2-2 in 1986 and winning 1-0 six years later.

The Poles have been buoyed by an unbeaten start to their campaign to reach the World Cup finals in Brazil, having drawn with Montenegro and beaten Moldova before they met England.

Uruguay will be looking for solace after back-to-back defeats to lowly Bolivia and bitter rivals Argentina, and a draw with Ecuador.

Neither side will be using the Gdansk match to hone their skills for a looming competitive match, however, as their next World Cup qualifiers will not be until March, when Poland travel to Ukraine and Uruguay host Paraguay
