Euro 2012 Match Preview: Poland v Greece
Published : 08 Jun 2012 14:49:01
The tournament kicks off with Poland vs Greece
Just as we're starting to miss those weekends of football, the UEFA European Championship is upon us. The first match of the tournament will see co-hosts Poland face 2004 tournament winners Greece.
Football has many great things, but this summer this tournament will serve to distract us from the economic downturn Europe is facing.
The first match always has an added extra pressure, and even more so for Poland, as they won't want to disappoint the home crowd. Whereas Greece qualified top of their group - having won seven and drawn three matches, Poland automatically qualified as co-hosts.
Even though nearly eight years have passed since Greece won the European Finals, two players from that era remain Panathinaikos' Kostantinos Katsouranis and team mate Giorgios Karagounis. This team is a mix of new and old, Celtic striker Georgios Samaras is the key player for Greece.
2010 saw Fernando Santos take over from Otto Rehangel as manager. Before that he managed AEK, Panathinaikos and PAOK, because of his hard work and effort he was awarded with "Manager of the Decade" in Greece.
Poland will not only want to give a good impression in what football is concerned, but also they will want to show their home fans can behave. The safety of the tournament was questioned after BBC's Panorama shone a light on some incidents in stadiums in Poland and Ukraine.
If you have to pick one man out from the Polish side, that would be Robert Lewandoski. He caused an uproar in the Bundesliga this season, he plays for Champions Dortmund. His vision of play and capacity to make decisions on the spot make him one of Poland's best chances to win.
