Pilgrims break the bank

Plymouth Argyle have smashed their club record transfer fee by sealing the signing of Scottish striker Steven MacLean for £500,000 from Cardiff City.
The 25-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Pilgrims and will link up with Paul Sturrock for the second time, after the pair worked together at Sheffield Wednesday.
MacLean should go straight into the squad for this weekend's clash with Southampton, another club where Sturrock has also been in charge, albeit only for 13 games.
The Scotsman enjoyed the best part of his career to date under the tutelage of Sturrock at Hillsborough, where the forward notched 32 goals in only 60 games.
However MacLean joined the Bluebirds on a free transfer in June last year, but suffered a serious injury in August when he ruptured his ankle ligaments.
Since his return to fitness he has failed to hit the net in 13 games and found himself down the pecking order of strikers in David Jones' squad. Therefore MacLean found himself surplus to requirements and out in the cold at Ninian Park.
