Ailing Pilgrims axe Sturrock

Paul Sturrock's second spell as Plymouth Argyle manager has ended following a disappointing series of results.

The 53-year-old Scotsman has been replaced in the Home Park hot-seat by first-team coach Paul Mariner after Tuesday's 1-0 defeat at Swansea City left them languishing in 23rd place in the Championship table.

The Pilgrims have won just four of their 19 games this season and had lost their last three matches by 1-0 scorelines.

"The board has decided to make this move following the continuing poor set of results," chairman Sir Roy Gardner told the club's official website.

"Paul Mariner will take charge of all football matters until further notice.

"We are convinced that we have the capability to improve our performance and remain in the Championship."

Sturrock, whose first spell at the Devon club lasted three years, will remain involved with the Pilgrims in a 'business-support role'.
