Win at Deepdale is vital - Mariner

Former Argyle, Ipswich and England striker Mariner assumed control of first-team affairs on Thursday morning and one of his first duties was to inform the club's playing staff. He also informed the playing squad that Paul Sturrock would no longer be involved with first-team affairs but undertake a new "support" role at the club, working alongside executive director Keith Todd.[LNB]Following the meeting and the training session, Mariner looked ahead to the immediate task - ending a run of three successive 1-0 defeats.[LNB]Looking ahead to Saturday's game, Mariner said: "It's of paramount importance to get a result at Preston. Obviously one game doesn't turn around your season. We had a fantastic performance at Middlesbrough (where Argyle won 1-0) which we thought would give us a platform.[LNB]"The truth of the matter is we are not leaking goals, the players have certainly worked very hard on the training ground to plug whatever holes having been cropping up, so it will be enormous if we can get a point - or a win.[LNB]"But it's more about the longer term. It's about getting cohesion and all the things that coaches talk about for team's and we have just got to get it going."[LNB][LNB]
