Sturrock slams 'inconsistent' ref

A 78th-minute penalty from leading scorer Jason Scotland secured three points for home side Swansea. The spot-kick was awarded when Thomas Butler's shot was spilled by Plymouth goalkeeper Romain Larrieu who brought down Jordi Gomez as he moved in for the loose ball. Scotland's strike was his 21st of the season and it pushed the Swans into the play-off places. Williamson was a busy man, issuing six yellow cards to the visitors and a further two to Swansea. Sturrock said: "He was far too inconsistent and I can't honestly believe that we had six bookings. "The players feel very hard done by over the penalty decision and he seemed to take a long time making his mind up. "But we didn't do enough to win the game because the players were pushed back too far. "Swansea did more than us and probably just about deserved to win as they missed a few chances that they should have scored from." Gomez thundered a 25th-minute free kick against the Plymouth crossbar but by then the visitors could have already been ahead. In their first attack Ashley Barnes outpaced Ashley Williams only to see his close-range shot smothered by Swansea goalkeeper Dorus De Vries. Early in the second half Scotland outwitted Plymouth's central defenders but his right-footed shot skimmed the outside of the post. The usually reliable Gomez wasted a couple of easy chances as the Swans piled on the pressure during the second half. Swansea manager Roberto Martinez said: "We are in the top six and that is a reflection on our second-half performance. "We have learned from past lessons and the determination and responsibility shown by the players has kept them going in a difficult match and it was a fair result. "It was a difficult game to referee and I am delighted with the victory and the way we played. "It was a little frustrating at times but the fans stayed with us and that will become increasingly important in the final run-in." Swansea's next match is at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, and Martinez expects the Eagles to force his players to be patient. He added: "Every team that comes here from now on in will be making it difficult for us. And that is why so many of the top sides are dropping points at this stage of the season."
