Simpson hoping for Argyle debut

Josh Simpson will hope to make his Plymouth debut when they host Gillingham in the first round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.

The midfielder was the only one of Argyle's summer signings not to feature in Saturday's win at AFC Wimbledon, watching the action as an unused substitute having missed the latter stages of pre-season with a hamstring problem.

He could get his chance if manager Derek Adams opts to rotate his squad given the busy early-season fixture schedule.

Striker Deane Smalley remains a long-term absentee with a knee injury.

Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh must decide whether to stick with a winning line-up or make changes after his side's impressive 4-0 opening-day win against Sheffield United.

Summer signings Deji Oshilaja, Ryan Jackson, Ben Williamson, Jordan Houghton and Emmanuel Osadebe were all handed debuts at the weekend and Edinburgh has no new injury problems.

Midfielder Doug Loft (calf) and striker Cody McDonald (knee) missed out at the weekend and will be monitored.

But Edinburgh has plenty of options with Jermaine McGlashan, Rory Donnelly and Max Ehmer all hoping to feature after they were unused substitutes on Saturday, while new signing Josh Wright is pushing for his first start.
