Irvine: Wednesday were 'horrible'

Two first-half goals from on-loan striker Luke Varney ensured a 2-1 win for Wednesday against fellow Championship strugglers Plymouth.[LNB]The visitors took the lead through Rory Fallon, but the Owls hit back immediately before going on to clinch a fourth win in five matches.[LNB]"The most important thing is that we won," Irvine said.[LNB]"Obviously we want to win and entertain and play attractive football, but at this moment we need to win.[LNB]"It's not what I'm aiming for in the long term, but I'll take it right at this moment.[LNB]"We need seven more wins to make sure we're in this division next season and I'll take seven more horrible ones like that if I have to.[LNB]"The finishes were excellent, although our play wasn't always pretty, I think we deserved it in the end.[LNB]"They didn't create too many chances in the second half, so we have to be happy with that."[LNB]The visitors, buoyed by their midweek win over Derby, struck first as Fallon was left almost unmarked inside the six-yard box in the 24th minute, and the New Zealand international nodded home a low header past the stationary Lee Grant in goal.[LNB]But the joy of the visiting faithful was short-lived as Wednesday hit back immediately.[LNB]Left-back Tommy Spurr flung a throw-in down the touchline, Marcus Tudgay won the flick-on and Varney, making his first start since re-joining the Owls from Derby on loan until the end of the season, was suddenly free behind Plymouth's backline and poked the ball home for the equaliser and his fifth league goal of the campaign.[LNB]After a further 20 minutes of lacklustre football, the same three players were involved in Wednesday's winner.[LNB]Spurr this time kicked a hopeful ball down the line towards Tudgay who found Varney in space and he slotted home his second of the afternoon with a low shot past David Stockdale.[LNB]After the break, Plymouth pushed for an equaliser, but despite some sloppy play fr their hosts they failed to create too many clear-cut openings, much to Paul Mariner's frustration.[LNB]The Plymouth boss said: "I don't know what the possession stat is, but we had a lot of the ball, but we just couldn't break them down.[LNB]"They defended well, but other than a couple of efforts from (Jamie) Mackie we never really threatened.[LNB]"We know that we are in a dogfight.[LNB]"Clearly, the results haven't gone our way. but we'll play worse and get something from a game. Hopefully we can bounce back in the next game."[LNB][LNB][LNB]
