Argyle passed acid test - Reid

Peter Reid got off to a winning start as Plymouth manager and put an early dent in Southampton's bid for a return to the Championship. Luke Summerfield scored his first goal in over a year to lead Argyle to a surprise victory over the League One favourites at St Mary's. Reid, who quit his job as Tony Pulis' number two at Stoke to take charge at Home Park following Plymouth's relegation, said: "We try to enjoy the training and work hard on matchdays. "This was the acid test, and even though we didn't play well in the first half we were dogged, were hard to beat and defended when we had to. "For 45 minutes Southampton were the better team, even though they didn't really work the goalkeeper. "We had a chat at half-time and the players got back to basics when they needed to, made some important tackles and passed the ball much better in the second half. `We got the goal and defended well but we always looked dangerous on the break, so it was a good performance against a very good side."
