Rory Loy targets cup run with Dundee

Striker Rory Loy has targeted a cup run this season as Dundee prepare for the trip to Peterhead in the Betfred Cup on Tuesday night.

The Dens Park club have four points from their first two section games in the revamped competition.

A point in the 1-1 draw at East Fife - where they lost on penalties - was followed by a 6-2 triumph over Dumbarton on Saturday.

The 28-year-old was part of the Falkirk squad which reached the William Hill Scottish Cup final in 2015 only to lose to Inverness, and he recalled the benefits that cup campaign brought as he was asked what he would consider success to be for the Dark Blues this season.

"I think it is always nice to have a cup run, especially for a club like Dundee who realistically aren't going to win the league," said the former Scotland Under-21 player who started his career at Rangers.

"In the league it is about finding consistency, winning as many games as we can and pushing for that top six.

"A cup run builds momentum, it breeds confidence.

"Obviously being involved in it at Falkirk who got all the way to the final, it gives you something to look forward to.

"It gives you that competitive edge, you want to be involved in the bigger games so it keeps everyone ticking away over the course of the season.

"When the cup games come round everyone is still on edge, trying to be in the team for those games so it keeps everything competitive for the league games. So I think it is big.

"It gets the fans involved as well, big cup days are massive for fans too."

Peterhead will be without newly-appointed skipper Simon Ferry against his former club at Balmoor after the defender suffered a back spasm against East Fife at the weekend.

Nicky Riley is a doubt but manager Jim McInally hopes to complete the loan signing of defender Fiacre Kelleher from Celtic before kick-off, with Salim Nassor in line for his debut if international clearance comes through.
