Sturrock relieved by Argyle success

Argyle tasted success for the first time this season at London Road thanks to two goals in the space of six second-half minutes. Jamie Mackie broke the deadlock when leaving defender Craig Morgan trailing and firing past Joe Lewis in the 63rd minute before Rory Fallon rose high to meet a classy 69th minute Jim Paterson cross from the left. The 2-1 defeat sent Posh plunging into the relegation zone and left Darren Ferguson facing the first tough spell of his two-and-a-half year reign. While Ferguson had plenty of food for thought, Sturrock had reason to be happy as Argyle climbed off the bottom of the table. He said: "I am 52 years old and have been there, done that and got the t-shirt. "Pressure is part of being a football manager and is something you have to accept. Everyone in football is judged on results and we haven't been getting them. "We could have done without a lot of other teams down there picking up good results as well, but the challenge now is to take the momentum forward and build on this success. "We have brought a lot of quality players into the club and tried all sorts of different systems, but I decided to go back to being horrible and effective, and thankfully it worked." Ferguson handed a debut to loan capture Danny Rose despite the teenage midfield man only arriving from Tottenham Hotspur in mid-afternoon and also selected Charlie Lee and Jamie Day in defence. Rose released Craig Mackail-Smith whose 11th minute shot came close to beating Romain Larrieu. Mackail-Smith did have the ball in the net just after the half-hour when pouncing on a rebound after Larrieu had spilled a Lee shot, but his celebrations were cut short by the flag of an assistant referee. Plymouth were rarely seen as an attacking force before the break but Darcy Blake was only denied by a fine save from Joe Lewis after an 80-yard burst. But much better was to come from them in the second period after Posh had seen Day stretchered off with a gashed ankle. Mackail-Smith did cut Posh's arrears with four minutes remaining, but it was not enough to prevent them dropping into the bottom three. Ferguson admitted: "It was a game we were expected to win and a big disappointment that we didn't manage to do that. "We had six good chances inside the six-yard box but only took one of them, while we gave away two bad goals at the other end. Anyone who has seen us regularly this season knows that those things have been our problems. "We have won one game out of 10 and that is obviously nowhere near good enough. We have a big challenge ahead of us - the sort we haven't faced before during my time here - and we need everyone to stick together, including the punters."
