Posh boss taking it game-by-game
Liam Dickinson's opportunistic 51st-minute lob was enough to successfully follow up Tuesday night's victory over Sheffield United and condemn the Hornets to a fourth consecutive defeat and third in a row at Vicarage Road.[LNB]"It's great for the fans and players because it's been a long time coming for them," said Gannon on breaking the away hoodoo. "For myself, it's a good professional performance from the players and I'll enjoy it as much as I did on Tuesday.[LNB]"Even before Tuesday's win we only had 24 points, we're on 27 before today and if we're being realistic the norm would be 52 points to stay up. So with 11 or 12 games remaining we've got to double our points average. It's an incredible mountain for that group of players to achieve, especially if the squad's being depleted and you've got so many injuries.[LNB]"All I'm asking them to do is go from game to game and do themselves justice and in the last two games they've certainly done that."[LNB]This was Watford's third game without a goal and boss Malky Mackay said: "It would be great if something just hit somebody on the backside and dribbled in, but it's not and there's no hard luck stories. You just get on with it.[LNB]"We're down in that [relegation] area but we've got to make sure that between now and the end of the season we win as many games as possible. We were frustrated today, the players were frustrated but they were giving everything they had for the jersey today.[LNB]"If that wasn't happening I would worry, but they were and I think the pressure they applied on the Peterborough goal in the second half showed that.[LNB]"They're a young squad and for a lot of them it's the first season they're involved in this type of struggle," Mackay continued.[LNB]"We had a run earlier this season that went very well and now it's not so good, so we've got to make sure that we stick together, which they are doing, and go out there and keep working hard on the pitch. If I was worried about what I see out there in terms of application, I would be more worried than I am just now."[LNB]Only a fine double save from Scott Loach prevented the visitors from taking a 12th-minute lead when he denied Craig Mackail-Smith from close range and reacted superbly to keep out Dickinson's rebound.[LNB]Aaron Mclean also hit a post before half-time, before Watford were undone in the 51st minute when Loach bizarrely came right to the edge of his area to challenge for a ball, lost out in a 50-50 challenge and then could only watch Dickinson's superb 25-yard lob sail over him as he back-tracked towards his own line.[LNB]Defender Adrian Mariappa twice went close as the Hornets tried to salvage something from the remainder of the contest, Tom Cleverley struck a 20-yard free-kick narrowly over, while Will Hoskins' ambitious 35-yard effort also just cleared the bar, but Watford were unable to stop themselves from sliding to a third straight home defeat.[LNB][LNB][LNB]
