PNE ease to win over poor Posh

Two well-crafted goals, the first scored by Neil Mellor and the second by Billy Jones, saw the Lilywhites triumph for the first time since their 6-2 home win in October 1976. The damage was done in the build-up to each goal and Peterborough goalkeeper Joe Lewis could do little about either for his side, who have yet to taste victory in the Championship this season. Preston were without Youl Mawene (hamstring), so Liam Chilvers continued to deputise. For Posh full-back Tommy Williams missed out with a groin injury, with Charlie Lee providing cover. The visitors started brightly and Posh defender Lee went close with a shot from the edge of the box in what proved the best chance in a tentative opening five minutes. But Preston took the lead in the ninth minute courtesy of some fine wing play from Chris Sedgwick. The North End midfielder, who had to make do with a 20-minute cameo against Barnsley in midweek, drove for the byline and cleverly waited for eventual goalscorer Mellor to make a near-post dart and knock home his third goal of the season. Jon Parkin had a header saved by Lewis and Barry Nicholson was denied the chance to shoot at goal by a superb Craig Morgan challenge as Preston looked for a second goal. Craig Mackail-Smith went racing through 15 minutes in but his touch let him down and Preston goalkeeper Andy Lonergan raced out to gather. Aaron McLean then fired just over when he should have perhaps done better, while Paul Coutts had a penalty claim waved away. But the hosts scored a well-worked second goal in the 30th minute, with Jones providing the finishing touch. Jones, who was hugging the right touchline, was slipped in by Mellor on the right and he advanced towards goal before powering a right-footed shot beyond Lewis. The second half started slowly with the away side looking to get forward and Preston happy to sit back and preserve their lead. Substitute Lee Frecklington failed to connect in front of goal after tall midfielder Shaun Batt rose to knock the ball down at the back post. Richard Chaplow's grip on the midfield loosened and the visitors grew in confidence with Batt having a volley blocked. But North End were not without chances of their own and Darren Carter could and should have made it three just after the hour mark but for his reluctance to shoot, while Mellor was tackled by Morgan just as he was about to pull the trigger. Substitute Paul Parry pulled back for Parkin but he could only blaze over and midfielder Carter could only slice wide from distance 14 minutes from time. Ross Wallace missed an open goal late on but it was Preston who were comfortable in victory and remain unbeaten in the Championship so far.
