Maddison brilliance downs Tykes

A moment of Marcus Maddison magic kept Peterborough's challenge for automatic promotion on track as they saw off Barnsley 2-1 at London Road.

The early-season signing scored his fifth Posh goal in glorious style to settle an entertaining clash, brilliantly guiding a 30-yard free-kick past Ross Turnbull in the 69th minute.

In the process he completed second-placed Peterborough's comeback after they had earlier fallen behind.

Manchester City loanee Devante Cole fired Barnsley ahead with a stylish 15th-minute volley after being picked out by James Bree's right-wing delivery.

Posh striker Conor Washington was denied a leveller by the woodwork before eventually equalising on the stroke of half-time when seizing on a loose ball and firing a low shot past Turnbull from the edge of the box.

Maddison then put the hosts in front and the visitors' hopes of hauling themselves back into the contest were dashed when defender James Bailey was dismissed with 13 minutes to go. He collected two yellow cards - both for fouls on Maddison.

Posh were unable to add to their advantage despite piling pressure on the 10 men late on. Washington scuffed another chance wide before Maddison was denied in stoppage time.
