Johnson casts doubts over winter break

Peterborough boss Gary Johnson is sceptical about introducing a winter break in English football. Sub-zero temperatures have seen numerous games fall foul of the weather in recent weeks, increasing calls for a mid-season lay-off similar to those undertaken in many of Europe's top leagues. But former Latvia national coach Johnson is unsure of the practicalities of losing the congested festive fixture programme. "We never know when the cold weather will arrive, so if we have a winter break when should we have it?" he said on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. "In other countries you can predict when the worst of the winter weather will come. "If we lose the Christmas games and we're suddenly trying to fit in four or five matches, it could get very difficult in terms of negotiating with other clubs."
