Ferguson chasing Carling Cup run

Rather than copy Wycombe counterpart Peter Taylor, who rang the changes from the Chairboys' League One opener at Charlton on Saturday, Ferguson elected to field a full strength line-up for the clash. And the gulf in class showed as Posh struck twice in each half to register as comfortable a win as it sounded. Ferguson said: "We definitely want a good cup run. "In fact this club is pretty due a good cup run. "We want to emulate what Burnley and Derby did last year as they showed that is possible to go a long way in this competition. "We are a Championship side now and we should be looking to do well in these competitions. "Going on a cup run boosts the confidence of the squad and raises the awareness of the club across the nation, and that is what we are striving for." Wycombe had the better of the opening exchanges and could have taken an early lead if Jon-Paul Pittman had shown more composure when better placed. But that miss proved costly as Peterborough struck twice within the space of ten minutes midway through the half to take control of the contest. Firstly, defensive hesitancy allowed Aaron McLean to sweep home George Boyd's corner, and minutes later more dithering at the back allowed Tommy Rowe to steal in and toe a Tom Williams cross past Jamie Young. Out-moving, out-passing and out-thinking their hosts United were rampant, and the Chairboys had precious little to show for their efforts. It was as you were after the interval with the League One side struggling to contain their Championship guests, and it was little surprise when Ferguson's men added two further goals. Firstly came the goal of the night, Boyd switching feet before unleashing a 30-yard drive past Young, and on 68 minutes Shaun Batt rolled in Lee Frecklington who finished in style. Wycombe boss Peter Taylor admitted it had been a chastening experience. He said: "I don't think the score flattered them. "They are a very good team and some of their counter-attacking play was superb. "I thought we started well but when they scored that was it. "I was annoyed by our defending for the first goal as it was a basic set-piece and if we do not clear that up we will be conceding a lot of goals this season. "But we have no complaints about the result and we just have to pick things up and move on."
