City councillors had voted to purchase the land from Peterborough United Holdings Limited at a special meeting in December.

Leader of the City Council Councillor Marco Cereste said the land was a strategic site on the South Bank and owning it will allow the city to move forward with its regeneration of the area.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony told the club's official website: "This is a fantastic move by Peterborough City Council to help and secure the future of football in the city and support out club which has a reach into the community that goes beyond our fans.

"We really support the vision for a community stadium and are keen to work very closely with the city council to ensure we have a first class stadium fit for our football club and other facilities from which the whole community can enjoy and benefit.

"We have the opportunity here to really put Peterborough on the map."
