Peru claimed their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America after they drew 0-0 with Colombia in their final group match on Sunday.

With all of the Group C teams having claimed a win and a loss, the four were deadlocked on three points with a goal difference of zero heading into the deciding round.

However, with their superior number of goals scored, a draw was enough for Peru while Colombia needed a win to avoid an early exit ahead of the later kick-off between Brazil and Venezuela.

Colombia asserted themselves early but Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese made an important save in the fourth minute when he tipped Radamel Falcao's effort from a free-kick around the post.

Colombia left back Pablo Armero then went close with a fierce shot from the edge of the box but could only find the side netting before Juan Cuadrado lashed a 25-yard effort wide.

Peru striker Claudio Pizarro took a long-range chance of his own shortly before the end of the first half but it found its way into the safe hands of David Ospina.

Paolo Guerrero then went close as his low shot beat Ospina before rolling just wide of the far post.

After the break, Peru midfielder Joel Sanchez went close to breaking the deadlock when his low shot from the edge of the area was saved by a diving Ospina.

Falcao sent a looping header over the crossbar before James Rodriguez and then Jackson Martinez on the rebound went close for Colombia in the 68th minute.

Colombia's desperation was starting to show and they pushed forward in search of the goal that would put them through.

But it was Peru who dominated possession as the clock ticked down although Martinez was left to rue missing one of the best chances of the night in stoppage time when he found himself with the ball while unmarked on the right of the penalty area, but could only scuff his volley into Gallese's hands.

Victor Ibarbo then missed for Colombia with the final chance of the game as he sent his close-range volley just wide of the near post as Jose Pekerman's men crashed out.
