Archibald praises youthful Thistle

Partick Thistle manager Alan Archibald revealed his players' determination to prove the doubters wrong had driven them on to the Irn-Bru First Division title.

The Jags clinched promotion to the Scottish Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Falkirk before the players unveiled T-shirts emblazoned with the phrase 'kids v experience'.

Archibald told BBC Scotland: "One thing we have is a young team with a lot of hunger and desire and they want to prove themselves. That's what drove them on all season."

Archibald took over, initially on a caretaker basis, when Jackie McNamara left to take over Dundee United in January. With Morton pushing hard, some predicted Thistle would falter but they are unbeaten in 14 league games since the managerial change.

Archibald added: "All you guys in the press and other teams, as soon as Jackie left, everybody wrote us off and wrote the players off. They took it to heart and that drove us on."

Thistle took the lead in the 50th minute when Andy Dowie headed home a Ross Forbes corner before Chris Erskine added a late second.

Archibald said: "It's been brilliant, the boys are ecstatic in there. We had a couple of chances in the first half and the surface was difficult, they couldn't get a strike away.

"Ross Forbes hit the post and it bobbled along the line, on another day it goes in. In the end it came from a set piece and we're absolutely delighted."

More than 2,000 Jags fans made the trip to Falkirk and Archibald gave them a "special thanks".

"They have been brilliant all year and they have been the 12th man and got us over the line on a number of occasions," he said. "They have had a positive effect all season on the club."
