McMillan welcomes steady start

Partick Thistle full-back Jordan McMillan admits continuity has helped his side enjoy a better start to the campaign than St Mirren - but he believes there is more to come from the Jags.

St Mirren travel to Firhill on Friday night looking for their first Scottish Premiership point under new manager Tommy Craig.

The Paisley club have only scored one goal in the league and have been rocked by an injury that will deprive them of captain and their top goalscorer from last season, Steven Thompson, for much of the first half of the season.

Thistle are seven points ahead after beating Inverness last weekend but McMillan is looking for more.

McMillan said: "It's so early in the season, I'm sure that's why teams round the bottom will not be panicking. It happens, a couple of teams have had a change of manager. But we are just looking to kick on ourselves.

"I don't know how many changes they have had but when you go through a lot of changes it can go one way or another. We only had two or three changes and we knew most of the boys coming in as well.

"It was the nucleus of last season's team and that has helped us.

"We are ticking the right boxes but we are not flying yet. We beat the team that were top of the league, albeit we are not playing where we want to be at.

"But we are getting there slowly but surely."

McMillan is looking to retain his place in the team after an injury-hit season last term which saw him play only 16 games.

"I had a lot of injuries at the start of last season, personally it wasn't great but I got a run of games near the end of the season and we stayed in the league, so I'm happy to be in the team and playing," he said.

"It was niggles more than anything and it does get you down but it's part and parcel of football, everybody gets injuries. I'd much rather have them than the long-term injuries some of the boys have had.

"I'm fighting fit and I'm looking forward to playing as many games as I can this season."

Meanwhile, St Mirren midfielder Isaac Osbourne believes Partick are much-improved since his departure.

Osbourne endured a painful campaign at Firhill last season, which ended in December when he suffered an ankle injury.

The Jags eventually finished 10th in the Scottish Premiership and have seven points this season - seven more than St Mirren.

Osbourne will meet up with his former side on Friday night and has warned his current team-mates they are a better outfit than during their impressive first season in the Premiership.

The former Aberdeen midfielder said: "I think they're a very good team. I thought they were a very good team last year but they are much-improved this year.

"They have signed some really good players and the players that were there last year gained some good experience, so it's going to be a very tough game.

"I'm in touch with a few of them, Sean Welsh and I spoke to Christie Elliott the other day, and I was speaking to the manager in the summer."

Osbourne is looking forward to locking horns with his former team-mates but there is no bad feeling following his summer exit.

"They are a good group of boys and it's going to be nice to bump heads with them," he said.

"If I'm playing I will be putting some challenges in and I think one or two of them know that."
