Tomas Cerny admits 'pedestrian' Partick Thistle have a need for speed

Tomas Cerny admits Partick Thistle have to get a move on in order to get their first victory of the season.

The Firhill side have yet to win a Ladbrokes Premiership game this term, with three points and just two goals in five matches.

Last weekend's 3-0 loss at leaders Hearts was followed by a more surprising Scottish League Cup defeat at home to Championship side Falkirk on Tuesday night.

The performance led manager Alan Archibald to put on a DVD session to convince his players they were as "pedestrian" as he first thought.

Ahead of the visit on Saturday of Aberdeen, the 30-year-old Czech goalkeeper conceded there had been a problem with tempo.

He said: "I felt that at times. Falkirk let us play but I don't think we moved the ball quickly to cause them any major problems.

"So I would agree that the tempo wasn't high enough.

"We knew after the game we didn't play well enough.

"Two defeats in one week is not easy. We need to try to bounce back and pick up points.

"It's is frustrating because we haven't won a game yet but it is still early doors, there are still so many games to be played.

"But we cannot be too frustrated we have to stay positive and try to win the next game.

"We need to play more in the opponents' half. We need to be more dangerous in the final third, maybe move the ball faster and get some shots on target."

Stuart Bannigan returns from suspension for the Ladbrokes Premiership clash with Aberdeen at Firhill.

Sean Welsh has recovered from a foot knock which kept him out of the League Cup second-round defeat by Falkirk on Tuesday night.

Gary Fraser picked up a knock against the Bairns but should be okay while Christie Elliott is out for the long term with a stress fracture in the pelvic area.

Willo Flood and Peter Pawlett return for Aberdeen following ankle injuries.

Mark Reynolds is the only absentee as he works his way back from shoulder surgery. Striker Lawrence Shankland joined St Mirren on a season-long loan this week.

Aberdeen will take no notice of Partick Thistle's poor start to the season, according to Dons forward Niall McGinn.

The Jags have still to win a Ladbrokes Premiership game after five attempts and three draws, and were knocked out of the Scottish League Cup by Championship side Falkirk at Firhill on Tuesday night.

By contrast, the Pittodrie side are faring altogether better so far.

Derek McInnes's side travel to Partick on Saturday with 12 points from four games, and having lost only once in seven meetings with Archibald's side since the Maryhill men returned to the top flight.

However, McGinn believes Thistle cannot be taken lightly.

The Northern Irishman told RedTV: "Partick are a side that play football the right way.

"They always play well against us although there are times when we have scored a few goals to kill the game off.

"They are always tough games, especially down there. But we will be more than ready to take the challenge head on.

"It is always a bit harder when a team loses during the week because they will obviously want to come out and get one over us.

"We will be confident but we know that we are in for a tough game."
