Big-spending Paris St Germain were sent crashing out of the Europa League despite snatching a late 4-2 home win over a much-changed Athletic Bilbao.
An Inigo Perez own goal and Guillaume Horau's penalty in the final five minutes sealed the win, but the capital club failed to go through after Salzburg came from two goals down to win 3-2 at Slovan Bratislava.
PSG looked to be going through when first-half goals from Javier Pastore and Mathieu Bodmar cancelled out Jon Aurtenetxe's second-minute header. At that stage Salzburg were drawing 2-2 in Slovakia but when they went ahead early in the second half, PSG's progress was out of the hands. Athletic, already assured of their place at the top of Group F, then equalised through David Lopez on 54 minutes, before PSG grabbed a consolation victory with two late goals.
Lazio beat Group D winners Sporting Lisbon 2-0 in Rome, and their place in the knockout stages behind the Portuguese side was confirmed as Romanian minnows Vaslui lost 2-0 at FC Zurich.
Besiktas came from behind at half-time to pip 10-man Stoke 3-1 in Istanbul and secure first place in Group E with Tony Pulis' men forced to accept qualification as runners-up. The Turkish side's recovery shattered Dynamo Kiev's faint hopes and the Ukrainians finished with nine men as they ended their campaign with a 3-3 home draw against Maccabi Tel Aviv.
