Paris Saint-Germain's latest prized signing, David Beckham, arrived in Spain on Tuesday and will be present at his new club's Champions League last-16 first leg tie against Valencia, an AFP reporter confirmed.

The 37-year-old former England captain touched down at Valencia airport and was whisked away to the plush Westin Hotel in the centre of town, just 200 metres from the Mestalla stadium as he begins his five-month stint with the capital club.

The former Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and LA Galaxy midfielder was accompanied by PSG's assistant sporting director Olivier Letang.

He looked relaxed and jovial in civilian clothes, while a team of security officers kept a close eye on the global megastar.

Barriers around the perimeter of the hotel kept journalists and fans at bay as Beckham joined his teammates, although he will play no role in the match other than to watch from the stands and support the team he joined on the eve of the transfer deadline.

Beckham who has been training in London with some of the PSG coaching staff, was in New York last weekend, where he attended a fashion show organised by his wife and former Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham.

He will return to Paris with the team following the match and is set to take part in his first full training session on Wednesday, with the view to possibly making his debut in Sunday's league match at Sochaux.

"He will start work with the team and we are going to see what his physical condition is like for possibly the match against Sochaux," said Italian head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"There is no major issue, he just needs to improve his physical condition."
