Palermo sack Gasperini: official

Palermo have announced the sacking of coach Gian Piero Gasperini, a day after a 2-1 defeat to Atalanta.

With Palermo struggling to make a clean break from the relegation zone, speculation that Gasperini would not last the season had recently increased.

Palermo's 12th defeat of the campaign, after 23 matches, saw the Sicilian side drop to the foot of the table as Siena climbed off the bottom after their 3-1 win over Inter Milan.

Gasperini had only been hired by Palermo after the side's draw with Cagliari in the third match of the season led to the sacking of previous coach Giuseppe Sannino.

Palermo said in a short statement: "Palermo wishes to announce the end of the club's collaboration with Gian Piero Gasperini.

"The name of the coach who will take over will be named tomorrow morning."
