Amelia enjoys Azzurri outing

Palermo goalkeeper Marco Amelia was delighted with his performance in Italy's 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Montenegro.

The 26-year-old stepped in for the injured Gianluigi Buffon and made several impressive saves to ensure that the Azzurri took three hard-earned points.

Afterwards, Amelia said: "I am happy that these saves helped us get a very important result.

"I am glad to silence a few of those voices that say there is nobody to back up Buffon. Of course I am not on a par with Gigi, as he is extraordinary.

"I have always given my best and when I am able to play for the Azzurri, I try to make my contribution.

"At the moment there are many goalkeepers being imported into Serie A, as they are cheaper and improve in leaps and bounds under our training regime.

"The homegrown talents just need to be shown a little faith, as Livorno did with me."
