Gemmill leaves U's

Scot Gemmill has parted company with Oxford United after just two weeks to take up a new challenge playing in New Zealand.

The former Everton star was drafted in as player-coach following the arrival of new boss Jim Smith, but his spell has not lasted long and he leaves the Kassam Stadium in a bid to prolong his playing career.

"Scot leaves with our blessing and we'd like to wish him well. He's had an offer to prolong his playing career in New Zealand and I can understand his reasons for taking it," Smith said.

"It's a big step but he felt it was the right move for him at this time. He wants to carry on playing as long as he can before he moves into coaching.

"We appreciate his efforts during his short time with us and thank him for his contribution."
