Dream debut for Vassell

Kyle Vassell struck a brilliant winner on his debut 10 minutes from time as Oxford came from behind to beat Carlisle 2-1 at the Kassam Stadium.

The on-loan Peterborough striker came on as a 75th-minute substitute, and five minutes later he hit a rasping left-footed drive from 16 yards past keeper Dan Hanford.

By then the Cumbrians were down to 10 men after centre-half Troy Archibald-Henville was sent off on 68 minutes after collecting his second yellow card in two minutes, for fouls on Danny Hylton and then Kemar Roofe.

Carlisle took the lead on nine minutes when Paul Corry's 35-yard free-kick in the strong wind was misjudged by U's defence and keeper Ryan Clarke, who watched helplessly as it bounced over him and into the net.

But Patrick Hoban broke his scoring duck at last for Oxford, on his 13th start, to bring the U's a 38th-minute equaliser.

The Irish striker sent an instinctive near post header from Roofe's superb cross into the roof of the net.

Dominant Oxford struck the woodwork three times.

In the first half Danny Rose's left-foot shot from Roofe's cross was deflected by Hanford on to the bar.

And in the second half both Rose and Mullins struck the woodwork.

Hanford also made an outstanding one-handed save from Roofe in stoppage time.
