Oxford see off Plymouth to close the gap between the two

Oxford closed the gap on Plymouth at the top of League Two with a deserved 1-0 win over Argyle at the Kassam Stadium.

Liam Sercombe, signed from Plymouth's Devon rivals Exeter in the summer, fired United in front on 32 minutes, coolly passing the ball into the net from George Baldock's pullback after good work by Danny Hylton.

The Pilgrims had already survived two scares at that point.

Alex MacDonald fired against the post in the 24th minute and moments later Ryan Taylor chipped over keeper Luke McCormick but against the woodwork again.

Josh Simpson had earlier gone close for Argyle, screwing an angled shot across the face of the goal.

Plymouth pressed hard in the second half but United skipper made three superb interceptions and blocks.

And on the break MacDonald twice went close to adding a second goal, McCormick saving well on each occasion.

It was a third defeat for Plymouth this season, while United are now unbeaten in eight and two points behind Argyle.
