Lowton & Wedgbury interest U's boss

Oxford could be poised to join the race for Sheffield United defender Matthew Lowton. And Chris Wilder's side, who gained promotion to the Football League via the Conference play-offs last season, are also believed to be considering the possibility of offering his former United colleague Sam Wedgbury a route back into the professional game. Bury have expressed an interest in Lowton after watching the centre-half make his first-team debut against Cardiff in March. Alan Knill watched the 20-year-old during the recent totesport.com fixture against Sheffield Wednesday and is considering the possibility of offering a long-term loan.  That would see Lowton follow in the footsteps of Ryan Cresswell who crossed the Pennines. But Wilder, who was Knill's assistant at Bury before taking charge of Oxford, is also said to be monitoring the youngster's situation closely as he looks to strengthen his squad after guiding the former Milk Cup finalists to victory over York. With just one senior central defender on the books after electing not to offer Jonathan Fortune a new contract, United will consider the possibility of handing Lowton a more prominent role next term. But the opportunity to continue his education in the lower leagues could prove too tempting for both the player and his employers to resist.     Source: The Star - South Yorkshire     Fancy a flutter with paddypower?
