Oxford have signed Laurence Gaughan on a short-term deal to boost their defensive options. The 20-year-old centre-back has become manager Chris Wilder's second defensive purchase after Ben Futcher joined on loan from Bury in November. Gaughan, whose previous clubs include Sheffield United, Liverpool and Celtic, has signed on a week-to-week basis as he acts as cover for the injured duo of Leigh Franks and Jake Wright. Wilder told the club's official website: "It's good to have a player like Laurence to help provide extra cover at the back. "He looks to be a talented footballer. He has been playing in America over the summer and has kept himself fit and it showed when he played in the reserves for us. "He played very well in his reserve games so now we just need to assess him over the next few months and see how he does."
