.... fans desperate to keep star player
Latics owner Simon Corney has warned that Jose Baxter may not be at Boundary Park after Christmas although he will be pulling out all the stops to try to keep him at the club. Success on the field could go a long way in being able to keep both Baxter and fellow loan player Matt Derbyshire for the rest of the season as finances are of prime importance.
Recent results have given the club hope that crowds may increase and a good cup run could also help to generate valuable income. Corney said, "We've played good football. We did well at Crawley where there was an unbelievable performance from Robbie Simpson. He got battered and bruised and gave everything. We've not had the rub of the green and should have a six or seven more points and be in the hunt but it's early days."With fans desperate to see Baxter stay Corney cautioned, "It's not going to be easy. Jose has already been coveted by other clubs. A lot of people are looking at him. The kid is magnificent. He has not had his head turned. He loves the boys and he loves being here. But at the end of day aspiration and finances will dictate what happens and I respect that. When it comes to wages Oldham are never going to be able to compete with Championship clubs because of the crowds we get. Anything is possible but I would say it's highly doubtful he will he hear in the new year."
